Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence will be a free, public school that prepares kindergarten through 5th
grade students of Springfield for academic success and engaged citizenship. The school will insist on rigorous, challenging
work and incorporate Dr. King's commitment to the highest standards and the ideal of the beloved community.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence has a Charter from the Massachusetts Department of Education to operate
a charter school in Springfield opening in September 2006.

MLK Charter School students will achieve academic excellence:

** The values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will guide the school. The school staff will recognize the good in all students.
All students will perform community service.
** Respect. School staff, students, and parents will treat each person respectfully.
** The entire school community will abide by behavior guidelines appropriate for a learning environment.
** The students will know the importance of school, will know that they can succeed, and will work hard to succeed.
** The teachers will expect all students to succeed. The teachers will provide each student with the individualized instruction
necessary for academic achievement.
** The parents will be partners with the school and their children. All parents will work with their children and the
school reading with the children, attending parent-teacher conferences and events at school, and insisting that their children
complete homework, get a full night's sleep, and limit their television viewing.
** The MLK Community Center will be the partner of the school helping the students succeed academically and develop character.
